Longtime Temple University general counsel George Moore dies at 67

Gavel

George Moore, the longtime general counsel of Philadelphia’s Temple University, succumbed to cancer on March 2, according to the college.

He was 67 years old.

Moore, who also served as Temple’s senior vice president and as secretary to the Board of Trustees, became the university’s general counsel in 1989, according to The Temple News.

Moore, who became senior vice president back in 2007, was also an adjunct professor at Temple’s Beasley School of Law.

Moore also previously served as president of the Temple Law Alumni Association and was director of the Temple Law Foundation and Temple Educational Support Services, according to the student-run newspaper.

Moore, who obtained his law degree from Temple, for more than a decade worked as a partner at the Philadelphia law firm Ballard Spahr.

John Langel, chair of Ballard Spahr’s litigation department, called Moore a “terrific” colleague, the paper reported.

“No one ever served the university better than George,” Langel reportedly stated. “We will miss him dearly.”

A joint statement by Temple President Theobald and Trustees Chairman Patrick J. O’Connor said that Moore’s role at the university was a “vital one.

“He was responsible for overseeing all of the legal affairs of the university and its subsidiaries, and provided advice on a wide variety of matters, including corporate governance, policy development, employment and labor issues, commercial transactions, constitutional law, and interpretation of statutes and regulations,” the two wrote, according to The Temple News.

It is not yet clear who would replace Moore as general counsel and senior vice president at the university.
