PHILADELPHIA — A former employee is suing a Philadelphia medical products business, alleging unlawful termination and discrimination.

James Alpha of Trenton filed a lawsuit June 25 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Medical Products Laboratories Inc, alleging racial discrimination

According to the complaint, Alpha received excellent performance reviews during his employment but one of Alpha's coworkers, Ahmed Patel, would subject employees of Liberian and African descent to discrimination, including racial slurs, trying to cause physical injury by tripping the employees with knocked over barrels and forcing them into a segregated eating area.

In addition to such treatment, the suit says, Alpha was told to do unnecessary work, including cleaning already sanitized mixers at Patel's command. Upon complaining to the HR department, the lawsuit states, it was suggested that the plaintiff tolerate the treatment.

On Sept. 13, 2014, the suit states, Patel terminated Alpha, alleging the plaintiff had physically threatened him.

Alpha seeks damages for reinstatement, compensation for lost wages and mental anguish, as well as attorney fees and court costs. He is represented by attorneys Judith P. Rodden and William M. Rhodes of Pozzuolo Rodden PC in Philadelphia.
