PHILADELPHIA – A Bucks County man is suing Aetna Life, alleging it denied his application for long-term disability benefits.

John Becker of Perkasie filed a lawsuit Feb. 16 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Aetna Life Insurance Co., alleging breach of contract.

According to the complaint, Becker served as a store manager for Ahold USA’s supermarket chain until June 2012, when a rare neurological disease and other complications left him unable to work. Although Aetna paid Becker’s disability benefits for 24 months, the suit says, it terminated coverage in December 2014 and denied his subsequent appeal.

The plaintiff alleges he qualifies for continued benefits and that Aetna terminated his coverage without seeking an independent medical evaluation.

Becker seeks payment of all benefits he is contractually owed, plus interest and litigation fees. He is represented by attorney Joseph Capitan of Martin LLC in Philadelphia.
