Former employees of waste company claim they were fired based on race

PHILADELPHIA — Six African-American former employees of a waste company claim they were fired as a result of racial discrimination.

Robert Hightower, Terrance Jones, Rashaun Williams, Damon Stokes, Marcus Moore and Lamar Mcintosh filed a lawsuit on April 12 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Suburban Waste Services Inc. and Suburban Waste Services of Delaware Inc., citing racial discrimination.

According to the complaint, the six plaintiffs worked for the defendants in late 2015 as throwers and helpers in the waste service industry. The plaintiffs were employed for varying periods of time between several months and three years, the suit says, adding that on Jan. 8, 2016, the defendants allegedly fired all of the plaintiffs, who are African-American. They claim that no Caucasian employees were terminated and that several with less seniority than the plaintiffs retained employment. The plaintiffs aver that they were terminated in an act of blatant racial discrimination.

The plaintiffs seek damages for all lost wages and benefits, punitive damages, costs, expenses, and a trial by jury. They are represented by Ari R. Karpf of Karpf, Karpf, & Cerutti PC, in Bensalem.
