Couple claim faulty dehumidifier caused fire

PHILADELPHIA — A couple's lawsuit against Sears Roebuck and Co., a home appliance manufacturer, alleging negligence, design defect, product liability and insufficient measures taken to prevent injuries in connection with a dehumidifier.

David Smith and Wendy Smith filed a complaint on May 23 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Sears Roebuck and Co., alleging that the home appliance manufacturer designed and manufactured defective products.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that on July 5, 2015, they sustained extensive damage to their property because of a fire that was caused by a malfunctioning dehumidifier. The plaintiffs holds Sears Roebuck and Co. responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to properly inspect its products before distributing them to consumers.

The plaintiffs seek judgment against the defendant in an amount in excess of $150,000 plus interest, court costs and any further relief this court grants. They are represented by Raymond E. Mack and Patrick A. Hughes of de Luca Levine LLC in Blue Bell.
