SCRANTON — A Mount Wolf couple are suing Gree USA Inc.; Gree Electric Appliances Inc. of Zhuhai; Gree USA Sales Ltd; and Hong Kong Gree Electric Appliances Sales Co. Ltd.; citing alleged liability, negligence and product liability.

Shaun and Christie Mumford filed a complaint on May 9 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania alleging that the Chinese company and its United States entities manufactured a defective dehumidifier.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that they sustained fire damage to their property. The plaintiffs hold the defendants responsible because they allegedly sold a dehumidifier to the plaintiffs which caused a fire on their property; Gree dehumidifiers had been subject to a prior recall because of overheating and fire hazards.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek judgment against the defendants in an amount that exceeds $75,000, court costs, treble damages and any further relief this court grants. They are represented by Steven L. Smith of the Law Offices of Steven L. Smith P.C. in Swarthmore.
