Pennsylvania prosecutors are asking a judge to schedule a hearing to determine the sex

offender status of convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky.

In a filing submitted Sept. 12 by Chief Deputy Attorney General Frank G. Fina, the commonwealth seeks to have Judge John M. Cleland schedule proceedings to determine whether or not Sandusky is deemed a sexually violent predator under the law.

Sandusky, who is in his early 60s, was convicted on June 22 after a two-week jury trial in Centre County, Pa. of sexually abusing 10 young boys during a 15-year time period.

The former Penn State assistant football coach, who remains in state custody, has not yet been sentenced, but when he is he is expected to spend the rest of his life in prison.

Days after Sandusky’s conviction, according to the prosecutors’ motion, the court directed the Pennsylvania Sexual Offender Assessment Board to conduct an assessment of Sandusky.

The results of the assessment came back on Aug. 22, the motion states, although the specifics of the assessment were not attached to the latest filing.

However, upon review of the assessment, Fina wrote, the commonwealth requests a hearing to determine the status of Sandusky as a Sexually Violent Predator.

During the yet-to-be-scheduled hearing, the commonwealth is expected to present the testimony of Robert M. Stein, a member of the Sexual Offender Board, the motion states.

The Sandusky case has gained international attention. The former defensive coordinator was arrested in November of last year after a lengthy grand jury investigation that uncovered numerous examples of Sandusky having had sexually molested young boys dating back to the early 1990s.

Civil lawsuits by abuse victims are also pending against Sandusky, Pennsylvania State University and The Second Mile, which is the youth charity started by Sandusky back in the late 1970s that is considered to be the place where Sandusky met and groomed many of his young victims.
