President Obama this week nominated Cheryl Ann Krause, an attorney who

works in the Philadelphia office of Dechert LLP, to serve as a judge on the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

Krause, who has been a partner at Dechert since 2006, and also lectures at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, is a Missouri native who grew up in suburban Philadelphia.

“Cheryl Ann Krause has displayed exceptional dedication to the legal profession through her work and I am honored to nominate her to serve the American people as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals,” the president said in a statement released by the White House on Wednesday. “She will be a diligent, judicious and esteemed addition to the Third Circuit bench.”

The Third Circuit is based in Philadelphia, but hears appeals in federal cases out of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Krause, who attended the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford Law School, previously clerked for Judge Alex Kozinski at the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, according to her biography.

She also spent a year working as a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy from 1994 to 1995.

Krause worked as an associate at the New York City firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell from 1996 to 1997, after which she served as an assistant federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York from 1997 to 2002, according to her biography.

She made her way back to Philadelphia in 2003 when she joined the law firm of Hangley Aronchick Segal & Pudlin as a shareholder.

Three years later, in 2006, Krause became a partner at Dechert, which she specializes in white-collar criminal defense work and government investigations.

During her legal career, Krause has successfully represented major financial institutions, media companies, private equity firms, and other companies in domestic and international government investigations, Securities and Exchange Commission proceedings, securities class actions, contract disputes, and general commercial litigation, her bio shows.

She has also argued a number of appellate cases, and has handled large internal investigations, Foreign Corrupt Practice Act matters, and antitrust cases across the globe.

She has also taught courses on evidence, cybercrime, and appellate advocacy at the University of Pennsylvania Law School in Philadelphia.

For the past seven years, her biography states, Krause has served as outside counsel for the City of Philadelphia’s Board of Ethics and on the board of directors of the Committee of Seventy, which is a non-partisan group that focuses on fairness in elections and government integrity.
