Aker Philadelphia Shipyard sued over employment discrimination allegations

Termination

A Philadelphia resident is suing his former employer over claims of discrimination resulting in the man's termination from employment.

Andrew Moore filed a civil action complaint Sept. 4 in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc., alleging employment discrimination in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and The Pennsylvania Human Relations Act.

The complaint states that Moore, a black man of Guyanan descent, was hired by the defendant as a welder on Sept. 12, 2005, after which he was subject to harassment and discrimination based on his national origin and race.

During his employment with the defendant, the complaint states, Moore was subject to discipline and suspensions for infractions that did not occur and for which other white employees were not disciplined.

The complaint states that Moore was terminated on Nov. 12, 2013, for alleged improper welding, for which other white welders were not terminated.

Steve Latimer and Luis Santiago, two of Moore's supervisors, aided in this harassment and discrimination, according to the complaint.

As a result of the discriminatory practices, Moore has experienced great financial detriment, pain and suffering, severe emotional distress, embarrassment, humiliation and depression.

Moore seeks equitable relief, compensatory and punitive damages, and attorney fees and court costs. He is represented by Marc A. Weinberg of Saffren & Weinberg in Jenkintown, Penn.
