Worker alleges health care groups fired her because of disabilities

Womandepressed

PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia woman is suing her employer, alleging she was terminated due to her disability.

Cynthia Corbin filed a lawsuit Jan. 28 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Independence Healthcare Corporation, Liberty Healthcare Corporation and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Aging, alleging violation of the ADA and unlawful termination.

According to the complaint, Corbin was employed by the defendant from November 2010 to November 2012, and her disabilities required accommodations for certain activities, such as making long business-related drives and attending meeting via telephone. Corbin hired a driver for the long-distance trips, but when she filed for reimbursement of $2,216, the suit states, the amount was refused.

In October 2012, the lawsuit states the plaintiff was told she was expected to attend all meetings in person, and in November 2012, she was terminated for late paperwork, despite accommodations which allowed for late submission.

Corbin seeks damages for lost wages and humiliation, as well as legal fees. She is represented by attorneys Stephen G. Console and M. Susan Toth of Console Law Office LLC in Philadelphia.
