PHILADELPHIA – A New Jersey couple is suing the manufacturers of a knee implant, alleging the device was defective.

John and Lorena Barbadoro filed a lawsuit Feb. 17 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Zimmer Inc., alleging product liability, negligence and breach of warranty.

According to the complaint, John Barbadoro received two Zimmer NexGen implants in his left knee Jan. 28, 2009. The suit says the devices failed, causing Barbadoro to undergo reparative surgery July 11, 2014.

The suit blames Zimmer for design defects, failure to warn patients of potential problems and manufacturing defects. John Barbadoro alleges he suffered physical injury and economic loss, and his wife, Lorena, alleges loss of consortium.

The Barbadoros seek a jury trial and punitive and compensatory damages to be determined at trial. They are represented by attorneys James R. Ronca and Melissa Fry Hague of Anapol Weiss in Philadelphia.
