Sallie Mae allegedly placed 500 debt collection calls without consent

PHILADELPHIA — An individual is suing Sallie Mae Bank, citing alleged invasion of privacy and violation of telephone harassment statutes.

Chanel Baker filed a complaint on April 2 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, alleging that the defendant violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that she received 500 calls from the defendant in an attempt to collect an alleged debt using an automatic telephone dialing system or an artificial or pre-recorded voice. The plaintiff claims that upon answering a call, she spoke with an agent or representative of the defendant and requested that the company stop calling her. 

Despite revoking her consent, plaintiff allegedly still received numerous calls that invaded her privacy and left her feeling harassed. 

The plaintiff holds the defendant responsible for violating federal law by allegedly placing non-emergency telephone calls to her cellular telephone using an automatic telephone dialing system or pre-recorded or artificial voice without consent.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment for statutory and punitive damages, actual damages, treble damages and any other relief that this court deems just and proper. She is represented by Octavio Gomez of Morgan & Morgan, Tampa PA in Tampa, Fla.
