PHILADELPHIA — An individual is suing her former employers, the Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, for allegedly violating the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Dr. Kaede Ota filed a complaint on April 19 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, alleging that the defendants violated the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that she was forced to resign from her job because the defendants allegedly subjected her to a hostile work environment on account of her pregnancy. As a result, the plaintiff claims that she has suffered financial damages, emotional damages, mental anguish, humiliation and the loss of life's pleasures. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible for allegedly discriminating against her because she was pregnant and needed to take maternity leave.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory and punitive damages, liquidated damages, costs, fees, disbursements and any other equitable and appropriate relief.
