All Philadelphia Common Pleas Court judges up for retention overwhelmingly secured ‘yes’ votes during Tuesday’s general election, a review of the commonwealth’s Department of State website shows.
The 19 First Judicial District judges on the ballot will go on to serve additional 10-year terms.
The closest margin between ‘yes’ and ‘no’ votes was for Common Pleas Court Judge James Murray Lynn, with 67.2 percent favoring his retention over 32.8 percent who said no to his retention.
The 19 judges who secured retention are as follows: Joan A. Brown, Denis P. Cohen, Rose Marie DeFino-Nastasi, Thomas Dempsey, Kevin M. Dougherty, Gary S. Glazer, Elizabeth Jackson, James Murray Lynn, Margaret T. Murphy, Arnold L. New, George W. Overton, Paul P. Panepinto, Nitza I. Quinones Alejandro, Lisa M. Rau, Robert J. Rebstock, Gregory E. Smith, Albert John Snite, Jr., Earl W. Trent, Jr., and Chris Wogan.
There are 439 Common Pleas Court judges in the 60 judicial districts that comprise Pennsylvania’s judiciary.
Common Pleas Courts serve as the commonwealth’s general trial jurisdiction.
Unlike many other states, all judges are elected in Pennsylvania. State law mandates that Common Pleas Court judges retire by the end of the year in which they turn 70.
