Philadelphia-area residents will have the opportunity to get free legal advice via telephone next month, the Philadelphia Bar Association announced late last week.

In a statement on its website, the association said any resident of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties will be able to speak for free with an attorney from the group on Wednesday Sept. 19 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Lawyers volunteering their time will be able to handle inquiries regarding family law, landlord-tenant issues, workers’ compensation and employment law, in addition to other legal topics.

The public service project is sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division of the Philadelphia Bar Association.

Those with legal questions will be able to call the Bar Association’s LegalLine P.M. hotline at 215-238-6333.

LegalLine P.M., which is offered on the third Wednesday of each month, began 20 years ago as a way to help area residents through direct service or through referral service.

The Philadelphia Bar Association also offers another program during normal work hours titled the Lawyer Referral and Information Service, or LRIS, which provides lawyer referrals to area residents.

Staff attorneys will take calls from the general public and refer callers to attorneys in private practice for a half-hour consultation, for which the attorneys agree to only charge a fee of $30, according to the bar association.

LRIS is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by calling 215-238-6333.
