Driver sues Eldredge Cos. claiming that he was discriminated due to his race

Truck

PHILADELPHIA – An African-American truck driver is suing his employer alleging unfair racial discrimination.

Nolan Johnson filed a complaint on Nov. 16 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against The Eldredge Cos. Inc., citing violations of the Civil Rights ACt of 1964 and 1986 and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act.

According to the complaint, Johnson was hired by the defendant in 1988 as a truck driver, and during his time with the company the plaintiff claims that he was an exemplary employee. On multiple occasions, Johnson and his fellow African-American colleagues were humiliated by their supervisor, Chip Mayo, who referred to them in a derogatory term. Johnson received training which limited his duties and position in the company and at the start of his employment, he was paid $1.50 less per hour than a white colleague with less experience. In 2013, the defendant began to change the schedule, only allowing Johnson to work four days a week. Johnson was finally discharged in 2014. The plaintiff is suing, claiming that the defendant unfairly discriminated due to race.

Johnson is seeking compensation for all damages suffered. He is represented by Kevin W. Tucker of Darren K. Parr Law Firm LLC in Pittsburgh.
