Woman sues Harcum College over allegations of age discrimination

By Carrie Bradon | Jan 7, 2016

PHILADELPHIA – A Wyndmoor woman is suing her employer after she alleges she was unfairly discriminated against because of her age.

Susan Friedland filed a complaint on Dec. 21 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Harcum College citing violations of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Friedland, 61, was hired by the defendant in 2008 as the director of foundations and grants, the complaint states.

During her time of employment, Friedland performed her duties satisfactorily, but despite this she was overlooked for a promotion, she claims.

According to the complaint, the individual who was chosen over the plaintiff was younger and neither qualified nor trained for the position.

Following this, a supervisor of the plaintiff refused to discuss certain projects and requirements with the her, she claims. After her request to take FMLA time off to spend with her ill and elderly father, Friedland was terminated on April 15, she claims. The complaint states she was replaced by a younger employee.

Friedland is seeking compensation of more than $150,000 for lost benefits, damages received and legal fees. She is represented by Michael Murphy and Michael Groh of the Murphy Law Group LLC in Philadelphia.
