HARRISBURG – A North Bend man is seeking damages following an incident in which his insurance company allegedly refused to cover the expenses of an amputation.

Ronald E. Long filed a complaint Jan. 26 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania against Stonebridge Life Insurance Co., alleging breach of contract.

According to the complaint, Long is a Type 1 diabetic who bought an accidental death and dismemberment policy from the defendant, as he was aware of the risks which being a diabetic carried. The suit states that on Feb. 9, 2013, the plaintiff slipped and fell on rocks, injuring his ankle and leg. His leg swelled and his doctors advised that the leg had become infected, the suit states, and required amputation.

According to the suit, Long had his leg amputated on March 21, 2013, and requested coverage from Stonebridge in the amount of $50,000. On April 28, 2014, the defendant allegedly denied the plaintiff coverage.

Long seeks damages of more than $75,000 and legal fees. He is represented by Michael R. Kelly of Smigel, Anderson & Sacks LLP in Harrisburg.
