Former Madison Township secretary sues over termination

Wrongful term 04

SCRANTON — A former Madison Township office employee is suing the township and a supervisor, citing alleged hostile work environment and wrongful discharge.

Deborah Gromlich filed a complaint on April 15, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania against the Township of Madison and Philip Setzer, a municipal corporation and the Madison Township supervisor respectively, alleging that they deprived her of her constitutional rights and terminated her employment.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that, in 2002, she was repeatedly bullied after she expressed her intention to be considered for the supervisor position. It came to a point where her salary was reduced and later on she was terminated, the suit says. The plaintiff holds Township of Madison and Philip Setzer responsible because the defendants allegedly constantly harassed her and told her that she wasn't qualified for the supervisor position because she was a female, according to the suit. Furthermore, the suit says, she was terminated for wanting to exercise her constitutional right.

The plaintiff seeks amount to be determined with interest, costs of suit, and reasonable attorney fees. She is represented by John J. Lawler and Harry T. Coleman of Carbondale, Pennsylvania.
