Woman files suit over Unum Life's termination of long-term disability benefits

Insurance 09

PHILADELPHIA – A Morrisville woman alleges her long-term disability benefits were prematurely terminated.

Rahelamma Abraham filed a complaint on Jan. 2 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Unum Life Insurance Co. of America alleging that the insurance company refused to pay plaintiff's claim for benefits.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that in 2014, she became disabled due to having wet age-related macular degeneration of her right eye and applied for disability benefits. The suit states she received short-term disability benefits from Feb. 3 to July 31, 2014, and long-term disability benefits from Aug. 1, 2014, to Nov. 1, 2016. The suit states the defendant denied her long-term disability benefits on Nov. 30, 2016.

The plaintiff holds Unum Life Insurance Co. of America responsible because the defendant allegedly terminated plaintiff's disability benefits despite the opinions of her physician.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendant in an amount of more than $150,000 plus interest and court costs. She is represented by Brandon A. Swartz and Larissa K. Staszkiw of Swartz Culleton PC in Newtown.
