Resident blames Department of Veterans Affairs for fall on campus

Slip02

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh resident is suing the United States of America, claiming the Department of Veterans Affairs is guilty of negligence.

Jeremy Byers filed a complaint July 20 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, alleging that the department failed to properly maintain the sidewalk at its H.J. Heinz Campus facility.

According to the complaint, Byers was a resident of the facility and allegedly fell while walking on campus on Feb. 22, 2016, resulting in a lumbar sprain and bilateral neuropathy of the lower extremities.

Byers claims the defendant allowed the sidewalk and the adjacent area to become unsafe for walking and failed to install proper lighting to make potential hazards clearly visible.

The plaintiff seeks $75,000 exclusive of costs and interest. He is represented by William Gagliardino in Pittsburgh.
