WILKES-BARRE — A Maryland couple are suing Cove Haven Inc. hotel operators and others citing alleged negligence.

Joseph Blanchard and Cindy Blanchard filed a complaint on Sept. 20 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania against the defendants, alleging they failed to maintain the hotel premises in reasonably safe condition.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that on Dec. 29, 2016, they were guest at defendants' hotel in Lakeville when Joseph Blanchard was caused to fall while descending the staircase due to an artificial hazard. He sustained severe injuries to his lower extremity, including nerve injuries to his foot and ankle.

Cindy Blanchard allegedly was deprived of her spouse's comfort, service and society. The plaintiffs hold Cove Haven Inc., et al responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to inspect the premises to discover the dangerous condition, failed to make it safe, and failed to give notice of the existing danger.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek judgment against defendants in an amount in excess of $75,000, plus costs and interest. They are represented by Kelly Lenahan of Lenahan & Dempsey PC in Scranton.

The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania Case No. is 3:18-cv-01848-ARC.
