PITTSBURGH — An Erie County couple are suing UPMC, UPMC Hamot, Great Lakes Surgical Specialists Inc., and David Dexter, health care providers, citing alleged negligence.
Mr. and Mrs. Bruce MacDonald filed a complaint on Sept. 4 in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas against the defendants, alleging they failed to properly managed Bruce MacDonald's abdominal condition.
According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that on Sept. 19, 2015, Bruce MacDonald was under the care of defendants for treatment of an acute onset of abdominal pain. As a result of defendants' negligent treatment, his condition went undiagnosed and untreated, resulting in severe neurological injuries and dysfunction, the suit says. He was caused to suffer unnecessary surgery, pain, discomfort, and increased risk of complications, the suit says.
The plaintiffs holds UPMC, UPMC Hamot, Great Lakes Surgical Specialists Inc. and David Dexter responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to appropriately use antibiotic therapy, negligently misdiagnosed his condition, and negligently proceeded with the laparotomy and hemicolectomy despite his condition.
The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek damages in an amount exceeding the applicable arbitration limits of the jury. They are represented by Michael Murphy, John Perkosky and Benjamin Gobel of Ogg, Murphy & Perkosky PC in Pittsburgh.
The Allegheny County Courts of Common Pleas Case No. is 17-12752.
