Cozen O'Connor issued the following announcement on Feb. 10.

Cozen O’Connor announced one of Pennsylvania’s leading tax attorneys, Jennifer W. Karpchuk, has joined its national tax practice. Karpchuk, a litigator, brings to the firm more than a decade of experience handling state and local tax-related disputes and transactions, including those involving corporate-level mergers and acquisitions. She joins Cozen O’Connor as a member and will reside in its Philadelphia office.

Karpchuk comes to Cozen O’Connor from Chamberlain Hrdlicka, where she served as senior counsel in that firm’s tax practice. She represents clients with state and local tax issues, including: challenging tax audits and assessments; assisting businesses and individuals seeking refunds from state and local governments; and representing clients looking to reduce interest and penalties associated with past due taxes via state and local amnesty, voluntary disclosure programs, and administrative appeals.

She also helps businesses determine and minimize nexus and potential nexus exposure for state sales and use tax, income tax, and gross receipts tax. As such, she often advises on the tax implications of pending and past transactions and represents clients challenging taxing authority rulings on nexus-related activities.

“There are significant changes to Pennsylvania tax law this year — including the state’s nexus guidelines — and a tax attorney with Jennifer’s background is a terrific addition to our practice,” said Dennis L. Cohen, co-chair of the firm’s Tax group. “With the state and local tax climate growing increasingly complex nationwide, Jennifer can not only help our clients determine their tax exposures, but also help them develop business strategies to minimize potential tax burdens. I’m very happy to welcome her to the firm.”

Recently named chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s State and Local Tax Committee, Karpchuk is also co-chair of the American Bar Association’s State and Local Tax Committee’s Sales and Use Tax Subcommittee and Miscellaneous Taxes Subcommittee. She is also secretary of the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Tax Section. A Super Lawyer Rising Star in Taxation from 2016 through 2019, she was also named a “Top Lawyer in Tax” in 2018 and 2019 by Philadelphia’s regional magazine Main Line Today. As an author, she publishes regularly on tax issues in a range of legal publications, including those produced by the ABA, Law.com and other ALM Media.

“I chose Cozen O’Connor because of the supportive and collaborative environment that the firm in general — and the tax practice specifically — provides,” Karpchuk said. “This is a well-rounded team of state and local tax professionals and I’m looking forward to helping our clients meet their goals.”

Karpchuk earned her J.D at Temple University’s James E. Beasley School of Law and her B.A. in history and political science, with a concentration in global studies, at University of Delaware.
