PITTSBURGH – Allegheny County elections officials are facing accusations they violated the National Voter Registration Act when they failed to identify individuals with duplicate voter registrations.
The Public Interest Legal Foundation took action against David Voye, manager of elections for Allegheny County, and Rich Fitzgerald, Bethany Hallam, and Samuel DeMarco III, who are members of the Allegheny County Board of Elections. They were sued in their official capacities in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania Feb. 24 amid allegations they violated Section 8 of the act.
The foundation said that after an extensive review and evaluation of the defendants’ practices, it discovered “failures to maintain an accurate and correct voter roll.” It distributed a report, titled “Steeling The Vote” to detail its findings.
Now, the foundation seeks a declaration that the defendants have violated Section 8 of the act. It also wants an order that requires defendants to look into the inaccurate registrations that the foundation discovered and for the defendants to be required to conduct a process in which they can maintain the list to eliminate any violations.
The foundation also requested the defendants pay its attorney’s fees and any other legal costs the court deems appropriate.
