PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia personal injury law firm is facing a lawsuit alleging it fired one of its paralegals due to her health condition.

Lisa Pio filed a complaint April 21 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against The Law Offices of Joel Kofsky PC alleging violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Pennsylvania Human Relations Act.

Pio began working as a paralegal for Kofsky's law office in October 2019 and several months prior to her employment, she underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from her kidney. She alleges that on Oct. 29, 2019, she informed the firm of her previous surgery and that she sometimes felt ill and was unable to take medication for her condition due to lack of health insurance. Pio claims four days later, she was abruptly terminated for false reasons.

Pio seeks monetary and all other just relief. She is represented by Ari Karpf of Karpf, Karpf & Cerutti PC in Bensalem.
