PEPPER HAMILTON LLP: Troutman Pepper Partner Joan Arnold Named Chair of Tax Section of the ABA

Award

Pepper Hamilton LLP issued the following announcement on Aug. 11.

Joan Arnold, a partner at Troutman Pepper and leader of the firm’s Tax and Benefits Practice Group, has become the Chair of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association. Arnold was appointed Chair-Elect in August 2019 and automatically succeeded to the Chair position on August 4, 2020. During her one-year term as Chair, Arnold will work to advance the group’s mission to educate its members and the public about taxes and tax systems and to provide leadership for the development of an equitable, efficient and workable tax system.

“I look forward to working within the section to further our goals,” Arnold said. “I am particularly interested in enhancing our diversity and inclusion efforts, increasing opportunities for young attorneys and creating more awareness and transparency around the section’s structure.”

“It is particularly rewarding that we have already instituted the Women in Tax Forum, which provides a community for those interested in advancing the needs and interests of women tax professionals,” Arnold added. The Women in Tax Forum hosts a complimentary Zoom Tea on the first Friday of each month. Those interested should follow the section on LinkedIn for updates.

Established in 1939, the ABA’s Tax Section now includes more than 11,000 tax attorneys across the country. Leadership within the section typically evolves from committee membership to committee leadership to council director roles and finally to officer responsibilities.

Arnold focuses her practice on federal and international income tax and is particularly experienced in the M&A activities of the private equity and life sciences industries and in handling the tax implications of cross-border operations. She regularly helps clients navigate the tax aspects of their domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions and counsels clients on business taxation.
