Lawsuit: Tea kettle exploded, boiling water scalded woman

PHILADELPHIA – A South Carolina woman is suing Lenox Corporation in Philadelphia court, alleging a tea kettle exploded on her.

Boiling water scalded Lisa Maseng as a result, says a lawsuit filed earlier this year in Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. The defendant, which is based in Bristol, removed the case to federal court on Sept. 15 on grounds of diversity jurisdiction, considering Maseng lives in Columbia, S.C.

The alleged incident took place Oct. 6, 2018, when Maseng was boiling water for tea. She says the kettle was in the same condition as when she bought it new at a Tuesday Morning store.

“(T)he product model involved in Plaintiff’s accident was subsequently the subject of a product recall as a result of its burn hazard following other instances in which the same product model similarly exploded and/or expelled hot water through the top, thereby resulting in injuries to end consumers of the product,” the suit says.

Attorneys at Swartz Culleton are representing Maseng.
