Reed Smith LLP issued the following announcement on Nov. 18.

Reed Smith partner David R. Cohen has been named to The Legal Intelligencer’s exclusive list of 2020 Pennsylvania Trailblazers. Cohen, who founded and leads Reed Smith’s 80+ lawyer Records & E-Discovery (RED) practice group, was highlighted for his many contributions to the advancement of e-discovery. In 2020, Cohen also designed and spearheaded the launch of Reed Smith’s free mobile “E-Discovery App,” which has garnered wide acclaim.

The popular E-Discovery App is only the latest of Cohen’s contributions to developing trailblazing legal technology. Cohen has worked closely with Reed Smith’s technology subsidiary, Gravity Stack, in the development of customized legal tools, including “Periscope” (an e-discovery metrics tool) and the “Anonymizer” (which can automatically redact sensitive information from large document collections) for GDPR and privacy compliance.

In 2020, Cohen was named Chair of the Project Trustees of the newly reconstituted Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM), as it transitioned from 3 to more than 15 active committees driving progress and reforms in e-discovery. Beyond chairing the Trustees, Cohen serves on EDRM’s Global Advisory Council, co-chairs the GDPR/cross-border discovery committee, and he has been one of the principal drafters of the EDRM white paper on AI in discovery, as well as the EDRM Privilege Log Protocol.

Cohen is an active member of The Sedona Conference Working Groups 1 and 6, and he serves on the Advisory Board of the Georgetown Advanced eDiscovery Institute. He helped set up the E-Discovery Special Masters (EDSM) program in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and he has been appointed to serve as an EDSM in multiple cases.

A long-time pioneer in litigation technology and e-discovery, Cohen previously chaired litigation technology committees of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and the Allegheny County Bar Association. He has also designed and presented e-discovery training programs for lawyers, judges, and neutrals, and he is a frequent author and educator, nationally and internationally, regarding legal technology, e-discovery, litigation strategy and related topics.
