SCRANTON — A former Scranton employee has filed a lawsuit against the city and accused his one-time employer for terminating him based on his age.

Larry Abballe filed a civil lawsuit Jan. 29 against the City of Scranton in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. He claimed the city violated the Age Discrimination Employment Act.

Up until his termination, Abballe had been employed as a full time Information Technology manger since January 2016. At all times during his employment he was older than 40. He claimed he'd never been written up or disciplined, but on July 30, 2020 he was told by superiors during a conference call that his position was eliminated and that his employment with the City was terminated.

He said he was never given a reason for his firing, and that he was replaced by someone who was significantly younger.

Abballe's suit seeks damages and reimbursements including both back and front pay, and benefits. He's also asked the court to forbid the City from continuing to take part on ADEA discrimination.
