2019 breach of private patient records lands Drexel University in class action suit

Federal Court
Drex

PHILADELPHIA - Drexel University and Drexel Medicine face a class action lawsuit filed on Feb. 8 in the Eastern Pennsylvania District Court after an alleged data breach of patient records.

The class is represented by plaintiff John Edward Boskie Jr., a Philadelphia man who blames the defendants' allegedly inadequate data and safety protocols for a breach of private patient information that occurred in June of 2019.

According to the suit, the breach included leaks of patient contact information, medical records, health insurance information, physician information and Social Security numbers. The breach occurred when a Drexel employee's email account was compromised by an unauthorized party.

The suit charges Drexel with breach of implied contract and negligence in keeping patient records safe. Boskie seeks damages deemed appropriate for the class' pain and frustration in dealing with potential identity theft and fraud.

Boskie is represented by Gorski Law PLLC of Philadelphia.
