PITTSBURGH — A woman alleges she tripped on an unlit staircase with no handrail while at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Lecture Hall.

Anne Cecile Van Cott filed a complaint Feb. 1 in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County against Michael Sanders, doing business as Opus One Productions, alleging negligence.

According to her complaint, the plaintiff was at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Lecture Hall owned by the defendant. She alleges that after using the restroom and attempting to return to her seat, she lost her footing on the stairs and fell forward and rolled her right ankle.

She further alleges she suffered a fracture, displaced tibia and tissue damage which required surgical repair and led to her having difficulty walking, having limited range of motion and requiring a cane. The plaintiff claims the defendant failed to have proper lighting or a handrail on the staircase, failed to keep the staircase in a safe condition and free from hazards.

She also claims the defendants failed to inform her of the risks posed by the steps and were negligent for failing to have an unlit path of egress or code-compliant stairs.

The plaintiff seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Gabriel Levin and James Stinsman of Levin & Zeiger LLP in Philadelphia.
