PITTSBURGH — A Port Authority bus driver who was injured in the January 2022 Fern Hollow Bridge collapse claims the City of Pittsburgh knew the bridge was in poor condition.

Daryl Luciani and Karen E. Luciani filed a motion for pre-complaint discovery May 16 in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County against the City of Pittsburgh.

According to the plaintiffs' court filing, Daryl Luciani was driving a Port Authority bus across the Fern Hollow Bridge on Jan. 28, 2022. They claim that the bridge collapse caused his bus to fall 100 feet into the ravine below and that he suffered serious physical and mental injuries.

The plaintiffs claim that the City of Pittsburgh had knowledge that "various attributes" of the bridge were not in good condition and in need of repairs. They further claim the City of Pittsburgh contracted and consulted with one or more state and federal agencies to service, maintain and inspect the bridge prior to the collapse. The plaintiffs seek discovery including inspection reports, maintenance records, drawings, photographs and correspondence related to the bridge's repairs, construction and remediation as well as any documentation relating to payments for contracted work on the bridge.

The plaintiffs also seek monetary relief, trial by jury and all other just relief. They are represented by Steven Barth of Barth & Associates in Pittsburgh and Peter Giglione and Devyn Lisi of Massa Butler Giglione in Pittsburgh.
