PHILADELPHIA — A man alleges he suffered injuries after an elevator at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia dropped from the seventh floor.

Antwine Coleman filed a complaint June in the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County against Thyssenkrupp Elevator Corporation alleging negligence. The company recently removed the case to Philadelphia federal court.

According to his complaint, Coleman was in the elevator at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia on July 28, 2020. He alleges that the elevator suddenly dropped from the seventh floor and jerked him around inside the elevator. Coleman further alleges he was trapped in the elevator and had to jump out, which caused him to suffer injuries to his lower back and knees and aggravation of his anxiety.

He alleges the defendant knew or should have known of the dangerous condition and that it failed to use reasonable and proper maintenance of the elevator. Coleman claims the defendant was also negligent for failing to properly inspect and repair the elevator or warn him of the hazard. He also claims he suffered lost wages and incurred medical expenses as a result of his injuries.

Coleman seeks monetary relief, interest and all other just relief. He is represented by Raphael Castro of The Law Office of Eric A. Shore in Philadelphia.
