As technology plays an increasing role in assessing legal privacy compliance, being able to translate legal and technical requirements into actionable guidance is critical for privacy operations. One area of ongoing challenge is a common understanding of anonymization and de-identification. The complex technical task of anonymizing personal data adequately is complicated by a lack of legal clarity around the appropriate risk assessment for considering data anonymized. Not only does the legal interpretation of the terms anonymization, de-identification and pseudonymization vary in different jurisdictions, but legal requirements need to be translated into technical requirements and aligned with the scientific community's view.
This panel will demonstrate how legal and engineering/data scientist teams can communicate effectively, exemplified by an engaging session about a problem everyone has: resolving this "anonymization" conundrum.
