The American Lawyer has ranked Ballard Spahr 23rd on its 2023 Pro Bono Scorecard, up from 31st the year before.

The firm reported a record 68.2 percent of its lawyers donating 20 hours or more to pro bono work, and attorneys across the firm are engaged in time-sensitive, high-profile litigation matters under the auspices of its Racial Justice and Equality Initiative, including representing plaintiffs challenging book bans and fighting classroom censorship. Ballard Spahr lawyers also provide pro bono service via the Wills for Heroes program and in partnership with dozens of other legal services organizations. Cumulatively, they contribute more than 50,000 hours of pro bono work annually, ensuring that clients have a voice and a legal advocate regardless of their ability to pay.

The Pro Bono Scorecard ranks Am Law 200 firms by their pro bono score for work performed by lawyers based in the United States. Half of the score comes from the average number of pro bono hours per lawyer in 2022; the other half represents the percentage of lawyers who performed more than 20 hours of pro bono work. Calculations are based on lawyer counts as of Dec. 31, 2022. The American Lawyer defines pro bono work as legal services donated to organizations or individuals and does not include work done by paralegals or summer associates, time spent on bar association work, or non-legal work for charities or nonprofits.
