Albert S. Dandridge, III—a nationally recognized securities attorney and leader in the Philadelphia legal community—has joined Ballard Spahr’s Business and Transactions Department and Securities and Capital Markets Group, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced today.

“We are delighted to have a lawyer of Al’s stature continue his distinguished career at Ballard,” Mr. Stewart said. “He is a superb securities lawyer, a former Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, a civic-minded Philadelphian, a leader in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our profession, and a decorated combat veteran. On a personal note, having been awarded the Philadelphia Bar’s Business Law Section Diversity Award, which is named for Al, I am honored to have him as a colleague.”

Mr. Dandridge’s practice focuses on municipal and corporate finance matters. He regularly counsels broker-dealers, investment advisors, and major public companies on their financing and securities reporting requirements. His recent matters include serving as counsel to the corporate trustee in connection with a $14 billion merger and subsequent sale of securities and representing an activist shareholder in obtaining a material stake in a major industrial company.

Mr. Dandridge is known for his involvement with, and investment in, the Philadelphia legal community. He was instrumental in the 2001 founding of the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group and, in 2015, served as Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, which had 13,000 members at the time. He focused his tenure on community service beyond pro bono legal work, particularly with respect to veterans’ concerns. The bar association’s Business Law Section named its Albert S. Dandridge, III Award in recognition of his having served as a “driving force” behind the development and implementation of its diversity plan.

Mr. Dandridge is a recipient of The Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia’s Honorable William F. Hall Award, which is given to an attorney who has made a significant contribution in the areas of social justice, peace, education, civil rights, or public health. The Legal Intelligencer granted him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. He also is a member of the Board of Directors of City Trusts.

Before joining Ballard Spahr, Mr. Dandridge practiced at Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP, where he chaired the Securities Group and was the firm’s first Chief Diversity Officer. Mr. Dandridge also has served as special counsel at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and as associate director of small business and international corporate finance in the SEC’s Division of Corporation Finance.

“It is a privilege to join Ballard,” Mr. Dandridge said. “My practice will benefit from its strong bench of securities lawyers, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to write my next chapter at one of Philadelphia’s finest firms.”
