Mcnees Elevates New Litigation, Real Estate Leaders

McNees elevated two members to leadership roles within the Litigation and Real Estate Groups, two of the firm’s largest, to support continued geographic expansion, team growth and service development.

Keynotes:

  • Carfley joins Kandice K. Hull as co-chair of the Litigation Group in strategic support of the team’s rapid geographic growth and practice area expansion.

Litigators and real estate attorneys joined offices in Pittsburgh and Devon, Pa., and Towson and Frederick, Md., and services were formalized in the environmental, social and governance (ESG) and professional licensure spaces.
Litigation

Stephanie Carfley handles complex claims and cases from initial dispute through to trial, as necessary. She draws on her substantial federal and state court experience to identify strategies that use litigation to obtain business objectives. Over the course of her nearly 30-year career, Carfley has tried numerous bench and jury trials as lead counsel, and regularly works as local or regional counsel with clients and attorneys located in other jurisdictions.

Carfley has significant experience representing public entities in condemnation actions, including asserting the right of public utilities to condemn property in connection with Marcellus Shale pipeline and infrastructure projects, and litigating just compensation and damages claims related to the same.  Her practice also includes litigating restrictive covenant disputes, business torts, real estate matters and other commercial civil litigation. She is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel, the preeminent invitation-only organization for superior advocates representing corporate and insurance interests worldwide and has also completed intensive training programs offered by the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.

Carfley joins Kandice K. Hull as co-chair of the Litigation Group and together, they are driving client success and innovation. Hull, who has been co-chair of the team for six years, serves businesses, individuals and trade associations in a range of complex matters including fiduciary litigation and real estate disputes. She has significant experience working on eminent domain matters in particular, regularly defending property owners in federal and state disputes.

McNees’ litigators are adept at navigating local, state and federal court systems at all levels and often help clients reassess their business objectives as a matter develops. The team of more than 50 attorneys, paralegals and support professionals represent individual clients and businesses of all sizes in all manner of disputes, including alcoholic beverage and liquor license issues; automotive dealership law; business and commercial litigation; construction and procurement law; education law; eminent domain; environmental and toxic tort; family and collaborative law; fiduciary litigation; financial services and public finance; injunction law; insurance law; intellectual property law; oil and gas matters; labor and employment law; and white collar investigations and defense, among others.

Real Estate

Esch McCombie leverages his deep land use knowledge and municipal relationships to help commercial, industrial, institutional and residential developers and property owners navigate zoning, subdivision, land development and other approvals and permits. In addition to working with townships of all sizes, he frequently handles matters for clients developing property in more densely populated areas including the City of Harrisburg and the commonwealth’s boroughs.

McCombie is active at McNees, participating as a member of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and the Environmental, Social and Governance Group. He is also the co-founder of the firm’s Legal Equity Advancement Program (LEAP) and co-editor of the Land Use Blog.

He joins Jonathan D. Andrews as co-chair of the Real Estate Group, a growing and collaborative team of attorneys, specialists and support professionals who deliver sophisticated legal advice to a broad range of clients in virtually all areas relating to commercial real estate law. Andrews, the team’s seasoned co-chair, navigates clients through municipal approvals processes for developers of utility projects and mixed-use or higher-density residential developments, among others.

To match the record growth and development in this industry, McNees added attorneys and paralegals who are subject matter leaders to its team over the last 12 months. The Real Estate Group now boasts a combined team of more than 40 across nearly all of its office locations, reflecting the firm’s commitment to providing top-level services to clients in this industry.
