PITTSBURGH - A recent lawsuit says a worker "on loan" at a McKees Rocks steel plant died cleaning a coil when he was crushed by two steel plates.

David V. Bogdan, acting as the administrator of the estate of Johnathan N. Smith, filed a lawsuit Feb. 15 against Lane Steel Co. in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County.

The complaint alleges that Smith suffered fatal injuries while attempting to fix a jam in an industrial coil machine at the Lane Steel plant in McKees Rocks on May 1, 2023.

The coil did not have appropriate safeguards, the suit says.

"As Plaintiff's Decedent's attempted to perform the work, he was pinned between two large steel plates and was crushed therein," the suit says.

In addition to his fatal injuries, Smith suffered fear of impending death, the suit says.

The plaintiff is represented by J.B. Dilsheimer from Stampone O'Brien Dilsheimer Law firm.

Lane Steel Co., Inc., a Pennsylvania corporation operating primarily from McKees Rocks, PA, is accused of negligence leading to Smith's death.
