PITTSBURGH - A Black former athletic director and girls basketball coach is suing the Mohawk Area School District, alleging racial discrimination.

Ronald Moncrief filed a lawsuit May 17 in federal court against the Mohawk Area School District for alleged racial discrimination and retaliation. Moncrief alleges that he was subjected to illegal, invidious and damaging discrimination during his employment with the school district.

He worked in various positions from June 2021 until his termination in March 2023, including as Head Girls Basketball Coach and Part-Time Athletic Director.

Moncrief claims that he was over-scrutinized compared to his Caucasian colleagues and was reprimanded for tasks they also failed to complete timely. The plaintiff is seeking redress under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Civil Rights Act of 1991.

In Nov. 7, 2022, after a three-day suspension, he was given a last change agreement he says was based on race and retaliation for claiming his suspension was also based on race. The following month, he says he was constructively discharged from his position as athletic director.

In March 2023, he received a positive performance evaluation but was fired as head girls basketball coach the next day.

The Law Offices of Joel Sansone are representing Moncrief in this case.
