ERIE - A preference for promoting females was the real reason a male teacher missed out on those jobs, a federal lawsuit claims.

Timothy P. Stoops filed a lawsuit June 10 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania against  the Millcreek Township School District for sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act.

Stoops alleges that his position as Director of Assessment and Alternative Learning was eliminated under false pretenses and that he was subsequently passed over for principal positions in favor of less qualified female candidates.

Stoops claims this constitutes unlawful sex discrimination, resulting in lost wages, benefits, and emotional distress. He seeks compensatory damages, attorney's fees, and punitive damages.

Joseph Chivers of The Employment Rights Group represents Stoops.
