HARRISBURG - The owner of a racehorse that had to be euthanized is suing Penn National, claiming its staff kept tying his tail to the starting gate despite commands not to.

Erin Carpio, a horse owner and trainer, filed a lawsuit June 11 in Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas against Penn National Gaming Inc., also known as Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, and several of its employees.

The suit alleges negligence leading to the death of her thoroughbred horse, Sir Steele. The complaint details an incident on August 16, 2023, where despite explicit instructions not to tie the horse's tail to the starting gate due to its sensitivity, the tail was tied, causing severe injuries that led to the horse being euthanized three days later.

Carpio is seeking $22,272.84 in damages for the loss of Sir Steele and related expenses. Howard Taylor represents the plaintiff.
