A recent court filing in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, has brought to light allegations of severe medical malpractice and negligence at a local rehabilitation and care center. The complaint was filed by Robert Sharp on behalf of the estate of Marjorie Carroll against 3590 Washington Pike Operations LLC, doing business as Bridgeville Rehabilitation & Care Center, along with Summit Care LLC, Genesis Healthcare, and several unnamed defendants on October 3, 2023.
According to the lawsuit, Marjorie Carroll was admitted to Bridgeville Rehabilitation & Care Center on August 9, 2023. Diagnosed with multiple health conditions including mild cognitive impairment and type 2 diabetes mellitus with chronic kidney disease, Carroll's stay at the facility quickly turned tragic. The complaint details that she experienced rough handling by staff which resulted in bruising and bleeding. Medical records from August 10 show visible bruises on her body.
The plaintiff alleges that inadequate hydration led to Carroll's deteriorating condition. On August 14 and again on August 21, medical records indicated elevated Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) levels—a clear sign of insufficient hydration according to the lawsuit. By August 21, Carroll had developed a urinary tract infection due to this lack of proper care. Further neglect led to acute kidney injuries and respiratory failure by August 22.
On September 13, Carroll was transferred from Bridgeville Rehabilitation & Care Center to St. Clair Hospital where she was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure with hypoxia and hypotension—conditions not present when she first entered the care facility. Tragically, Marjorie Carroll passed away the following day on September 14.
The lawsuit claims that these injuries were clinically avoidable had Bridgeville Rehabilitation & Care Center adhered to accepted standards of care and their own policies. The plaintiff argues that defendants failed in their duty to provide adequate staffing levels and training for their employees which directly contributed to Carroll’s suffering and eventual death.
Robert Sharp is seeking compensatory and punitive damages exceeding $50,000 for what he describes as gross negligence resulting in wrongful death. The complaint outlines numerous failures including inadequate assessment of Carroll’s needs, improper handling during repositioning which caused further injuries, lack of necessary medical interventions in a timely manner, and failure to maintain adequate hydration leading to worsening health conditions.
The legal team representing Robert Sharp includes Jessica Foster and Bryan Reid from Smith Clinesmith LLP based in Dallas, Texas.
