A recent court filing reveals a harrowing case of alleged negligence at a Pennsylvania nursing home, resulting in the tragic death of a 95-year-old resident. The complaint was filed by Todd Allan Long on July 29, 2024, in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County against Masonic Villages of Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, operating as Masonic Village at Sewickley.

The lawsuit details how Myron Lear Sorrels, a World War II veteran with cognitive impairments and other health issues, was admitted to Masonic Village on January 11, 2020. Despite his high fall risk and need for constant supervision, the facility allegedly failed to provide adequate care. "Masonic Village staff noted that Mr. Sorrels could not remember to use his call bell or call for assistance," states the complaint. This oversight led to multiple falls, including one on September 9, 2022, resulting in skin tears and another severe fall on September 23, which caused an acute intracranial hemorrhage and a facial fracture.

Long asserts that the facility's negligence directly contributed to Sorrels' suffering and eventual death on September 28, 2022. The complaint accuses Masonic Village of failing to implement necessary interventions despite clear indications of Sorrels' deteriorating condition. "By failing to ensure that Mr. Sorrels was provided with the appropriate and necessary care to prevent falls and injuries," Long argues that the facility violated several state and federal regulations designed to protect residents.

The plaintiff seeks compensatory damages exceeding jurisdictional arbitration limits for medical expenses, pain and suffering endured by Sorrels before his death, funeral costs, and loss of companionship for his family members. Long is represented by attorneys Elizabeth A. Chiappetta and Allison H. Greene from Robert Peirce & Associates.

Judge presiding over this case is yet unnamed under Case ID: [No: Unspecified].
