The Pennsylvania Bar Association Federal Practice Committee, the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, and Temple University Beasley School of Law proudly present the premier educational event for attorneys who litigate in federal court in Pennsylvania. The Symposium on Practice in the Federal Courts provides practitioners with the tools necessary to succeed in federal court. Esteemed faculty will review the key procedures and practices in federal practice. Advance your understanding of federal practice and become a stronger advocate for your clients.

Join us for a half-day program featuring prominent Temple University Beasley School of Law alumni including Chief Judge Goldberg and PBA President Nancy Conrad. You'll also hear from federal judges from the Middle and Eastern Districts of Pennsylvania and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, esteemed law professors and seasoned practitioners from across the state. You will gain valuable practice tips and strategies for litigating your case in federal court.

1:00 - 1:15 - Welcome and Introduction

1:15 - 2:15 - Winning & Losing Strategies in Settling and Trying Cases

Hear from Temple Law-educated trial lawyers who now preside over cases as federal judges.  Gain insight on best practices for trying your case, from pretrial submissions through closing arguments, if and when to settle, and effective trial strategy from those who witness it from the bench.

2:30 - 3:30 - Dispositive Motions in the Trial and Appellate Courts

A panel of trial and appellate judges alongside seasoned federal court practitioners will delve into the critical aspects of dispositive motions, offering insights from multiple judicial perspectives. Participants will gain valuable knowledge on best practices, strategic considerations, and the nuances of presenting and defending such motions. Enhance your litigation skills and deepen your understanding of this pivotal stage of federal litigation.

3:45 - 4:45 - Common Ethics Issues in Federal Practice

A panel of trial judges, practitioners, and an academic will discuss the ethics issues that arise in federal court practice today.  Among the issues permeating federal court practice are the ethical implications of using and not using AI tools, the potential conflict between the lawyer’s duty of confidentiality and the obligations imposed by the Corporate Transparency Act which went into effect on January 1, 2024, and the attorney’s duty to be acquainted with the benefits and risks of new technology.Prepare yourself for these newly emerging ethical conundrums with advice from experienced jurists, practitioners, and a professor of law.

Dean Rebouche´ will provide brief opening remarks prior to a time of networking with colleagues and panelists.
