On Nov. 15, 2024, McGuireWoods partner Alex Madrid awarded the McGuireWoods-Kaplan LSAT Prep Scholarship to Mela Brown of the University of Pittsburgh as part of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law Student of Color Visitation Day. They were joined by previous recipients Veronica Redden and Rukayat Sulaiman. Sulaiman, the inaugural recipient, just completed her first semester at Pitt Law.
Each year, Pitt Law hosts a group of undergraduate students of color for a visitation day designed to give them insight into law school. Students spend a day touring the campus, taking a mock class, and meeting with law students and professors.
Three years ago, Madrid connected with the Pitt Law faculty to inquire as to how McGuireWoods might assist the law school in its recruiting and mentorship of students of color. The result was the McGuireWoods-Kaplan LSAT Prep Scholarship, annually awarded to a deserving undergraduate student of color who intends to become a lawyer. The scholarship provides outstanding students with resources to assist them in pursuing their legal education. Students submit applications that include transcripts, letters of recommendation and curriculum vitae, which are jointly reviewed by McGuireWoods and Pitt Law faculty.
