Steptoe & Johnson attorney Samantha Phillips Beers has been appointed to the Grand Canyon Conservancy Board of Directors as of January 2025. The volunteer Board of Directors is comprised of individuals from across the United States and draws from individuals with a range of personal and professional backgrounds.

Phillips Beers has significant experience in environmental law, policy, and economic development, having served as a former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Director. She was approached by a representative from the Board of Directors regarding the position due to her environmental knowledge and community and federal government experience.

Phillips Beers will be serving on the governance and finance committee, helping to review environmental issues within the national park caused by extreme weather conditions, as well as interfacing with the 11 federally recognized tribes that have called the Grand Canyon home. She said she is looking forward to lending her experience to the organization during the three years of her appointment.

“Many consider the Grand Canyon to be the jewel of America’s national park system. The Canyon is going through many changes now, with environmental and energy issues and I am looking forward to adding my feedback to help improve the quality of the decisions made to support the park,” she said.

The Grand Canyon Conservancy is the official nonprofit partner of the Grand Canyon National Park, and raises private funds, operates retail shops within the park, and provides premier educational programs about the natural and cultural history of the region.
