Blank Rome LLP is pleased to announce that Michael G. Greenfield and Derek E. Schultz have joined the firm’s Philadelphia office as associates in the Labor & Employment group. Michael and Derek join the firm from Stevens & Lee, reuniting with partners Daniel J. Sobol and Brandon S. Shemtob, who joined Blank Rome in January. Building on the group's strategic expansion, Michael and Derek bring a wealth of experience in traditional labor, union, and employment matters to the firm.
Michael serves as a strategic partner to national and regional businesses, guiding employers on labor relations issues, including union organizing elections, decertification elections, negotiating collective bargaining agreements. He handles traditional labor law matters such as union avoidance, election petitions and campaigns, collective bargaining, grievance and arbitration proceedings, unfair labor practice charges, and hearings before the National Labor Relations Board.
Michael also assists employers through labor disputes involving picketing, lockouts, and strikes, and defends against claims of discrimination and retaliation under various federal and state employment laws. He provides pragmatic and cost-effective counseling on employment laws, including discipline, termination, reductions-in-force, employee leave, collective bargaining, unfair labor practices, restrictive covenants, and wage and hour compliance.
Derek assists clients with a range of labor and employment litigation matters before administrative agencies, state courts, and federal courts. His labor experience spans the entire unionization process, including union representation and decertification elections across multiple regions, negotiating collective bargaining agreements, and defending and prosecuting unfair labor practice charges. He also assists with grievance arbitrations, drafts post-arbitration briefs, prepares state court injunction papers, and develops and implements employer-focused strike responses.
Derek handles the entire trial preparation and litigation process, from discovery document review through trial strategy, negotiation, and settlement. Derek engages in trial preparation, assists with preparing for and taking depositions, drafts responsive pleadings, engages in motion practice, drafts briefs, and negotiates and drafts settlements.
Michael is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and received his J.D. from Widener University School of Law and his B.A. from Pennsylvania State University. Admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, Derek received his J.D. from The Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law and his B.A. from Juniata College.
