Temple Law student Madelyn Demchick, 2L, was named the Third Circuit’s representative for the American College of Bankruptcy’s Distinguished Bankruptcy Law and Business Student program. She was recognized at the College’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. in March 2025 along with students from each of the eleven circuits and from three business schools.
“I’m honored to be recognized for this prestigious award and look forward to learning from the esteemed professionals in this field,” Demchick said. “I hope to foster a network of emerging professionals who share not only an interest in bankruptcy, but motivation to think critically and creatively about what comes next.”
Demchick first gained experience in the field of bankruptcy law last summer as a research assistant for Temple Law Professor Jonathan C. Lipson. She explored aspects of the Bankruptcy Code’s legislative history and implications of the Supreme Court’s 2024 landmark Purdue Pharma case.
After her interest in bankruptcy law was piqued during her 1L summer, Demchick conducted her own research into how third-party releases—a controversial tool at the heart of Purdue Pharma—are used in international bankruptcy practice. Her article was selected for publication in the Temple International and Comparative Law Journal.
Demchick will be working as a summer associate at Blank Rome LLP in Philadelphia this upcoming summer. She hopes to further her exposure to bankruptcy and restructuring work in the practice setting.
“There is fairly fierce competition for this prestigious award,” Professor Lipson noted. “This recognition is a real testament to Maddy’s skill and to the growing role that bankruptcy plays at the Law School.”
The American College of Bankruptcy is an international professional organization focused on the promotion of bankruptcy and restructuring scholarship and service.
