42nd Annual UVA Law Softball Invitational Champions

The “Penn Carey Law Goats” represented the Law School en route to winning the annual law school softball tournament held at the University of Virginia.

The Penn Carey Law Softball Club had a strong showing on the diamond at the North Grounds of the University of Virginia, winning the 42nd annual UVA Law School Softball Invitational.

Since 1983, the North Grounds Softball League (NGSL) has facilitated the largest law school softball tournament in the nation, welcoming hundreds of law students from across the country to travel to Charlottesville for a weekend of competition and camaraderie.

“The annual UVA Softball Tournament has been one of the highlights of each school year and it is definitely something I look forward to every spring,” said Jared Turner L’25, Penn Carey Law Softball Club Co-Captain. “At Penn Carey Law, we do things a little bit differently than many of the other schools who make the trip down. Instead of limiting the number of students who can join us at the tournament, we try to make the weekend open and accessible to as many interested Penn Carey Law students as possible.”

Five teams comprised of more than 80 students represented the Law School—the Penn Carey Law Goats, Quakers, Blue, Red, and Silver teams— in a field that included 80 teams from 40 schools across both the Co-Rec and Open Divisions.

The Penn Law Goats won the Open Division after securing the five seed following competitive pool play, defeating a UVA alumni team in the quarterfinals on a walk-off homerun, and a team of current UVA students in the semifinals, before beating the Florida State Alumni team in the championship game with a score of 11-10.

The Invitational also provides an opportunity to give back locally, with proceeds from the event donated to ReadyKids, a nonprofit organization that has provided impactful programming benefitting children, families, and childcare providers in Charlottesville communities for over 100 years. This year’s tournament raised more than $45,000.

“Though all of us had a lot of fun hanging with friends from Penn Carey Law and making new friends at other law schools, Sunday’s Open Division Championship was the real highlight of the weekend,” said Turner. “As a former college baseball player, it was nice to find a competitive athletic release next to so many great friends.”
